  ObituaryData and SSDMF Data Compared

SSDMF - Effective November 1, 2011, the DMF data provided by SSA no longer contains protected state death records. Section 205(r) of the Act prohibits SSA from disclosing state death records SSA receives through its contracts with the states, except in limited circumstances. (Section 205r - Click Here)

This change has resulted in a reduction of over 40% of the Records provided in prior years.

In addition, the current SSDMF Records added since November 1, 2011 do NOT include City and State of Residence, while ObituaryData records always do.

The Graphs below show the record collection and publication history of ObituaryData.com compared to Social Security for 2018. With almost double the number of records, the collection of City and State of Residence, as well as the full obituary text, it is easy to see why ObituaryData.com has emerged as the most complete and current resource for U.S. Death information.
